Larry: *sob* It is not fair…
Phoenix: C-cheer up Larry…
Larry: B-but I c-can't believe this Nick! Why does HE get his own game?!
Edgeworth: Because Capcom wanted to do a spin-off, and thought I was the perfect candidate to base the game around. Not that I can blame them.
Larry: *cries*
Phoenix: Come on Larry, cheer up. Heck, I'm not even the star of these games anymore and I'm not down.
Larry: Well at least you WERE the star at one point Nick! And Capcom STILL whore your face out on a load of merchandise, you STILL get references in the games even though you aren't the star anymore, your games were re-released on Wii-Ware, hell you even got your own musical! What do I get?!
Phoenix: Larry, you're in-
Edgeworth: Let it go Wright. Let him cry it out of his system.
Larry: Is it SO much to ask for MY own game?! I'm the third part of this trinity! I want to see a game called: Larry Butz, Ace Womanizer!
Phoenix: Er…
Edgeworth: …
Larry: …
Phoenix: O-okay, moving on… should we start the review?
Edgeworth: Yes, absolutely.
Larry: NO! We should NEVER review this crap-fest of a game! It's SO aweful!
Edgeworth: You're just saying that because it stars me.
Larry: And you just want to review it because it stars you!
Edgeworth: Ngggh….
Larry: I notice you complain about doing this reviews ALL the time, but when it's a game starring you that changes EVERYTHING!
Edgeworth: W-well I-
Phoenix: Look Larry, if nothing else it's our duty to review the game as characters from the series.
Larry: … wouldn't our duty be to be in the games?
Phoenix: W-well that too but-
Edgeworth: I don't think he's going to co-operate throughout this review Wright. It's best to just ignore him.
Larry: Like YOU'RE one to talk!
Phoenix: I can't believe this… the two of them have switched places…
Edgeworth: Stop mumbling to yourself and let's get this started Wright.
Phoenix: R-right. Okay, today we're reviewing the latest game in our very own series.
Edgeworth: A spin-off game starring yours truly entitled: Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth.
Phoenix: Yes, Capcom wanted to try something new with our series. Instead of investigating a murder and taking it to court where you battle it our with your rival Prosecutor, this time around it's focused purely around the investigation of crime scenes.
Larry: Hold it! Then wouldn't it have been better to have the game star that detective guy?! What's his name…. Gymshoe?
Edgeworth: Gumshoe, Larry. And he's in the game, just as my assistant.
Larry: Ha ha! Nick and Apollo get cute girls as their assistants and you get some ugly, smelly, poor loser!
Edgeworth: I'll have you know-
Phoenix: Actually, I heard a rumour that the game was originally supposed to star Ema Skye in Apollo's era, with Prosecutor Gavin stalking her everywhere. But they changed that because they thought it would help the game sell better.
Edgeworth: Not that I can blame them.
Larry: So… if that's true, is the Ema Skye game still in the works?
Phoenix: I hear it is… that will annoy a certain someone…
Edgeworth: But enough dilly-dallying!
Phoenix: Please don't tell me you just said "dilly-dallying"…
Edgeworth: Onto our review of this glorious game!
Larry: "Glorious"?! I don't think so! It's a piece of crap! Worst game in the series!
Phoenix: Come on Larry, you know that's not true.
Larry: You're just saying that because-
Edgeworth: I swear Larry if you make ONE yaoi joke I'll have detective Gumshoe arrest you, and I'll make sure you get the death penalty!
Larry: *sob*
Phoenix: Well… let's start where we always start. With what is perhaps the most important element with the games in our series: the story.
Edgeworth: Ah yes. A story of my heroic efforts to bring criminals to justice…
Larry: The story is TERRIBLE! It's worse then Tekken 6's Scenario Campaign mode!
Phoenix: Larry, either review the game properly or go home.
Larry: Well I guess I'll go home! Because I refuse to accept that THIS man has a game of his own, and I have nothing!
Larry fangirls: Awwwwwwwwwwwww…
Larry: *sigh* Alright alright… against my better judgement I'll stay…
Larry fangirls: Yay!
Phoenix: All these fangirls and yet he can't hold down a girlfriend for more then a month…
Edgeworth: Anyway, this epic tale of heroic deeds, mysterious murders, gripping plot twists, and a very handsome Prosecutor, takes place a couple of months after Trials and Tribulations. Another game where you got to play as yours truly at one point might I add.
Larry: I am never playing a game on the DS again…
Phoenix: Oh, and don't worry folks, we won't go into spoilers here.
Larry: Speak for yourself Nick!
Edgeworth: You better not!
Larry: Or what?!
Phoenix: *sigh* After returning home from studying abroad-
Larry: Ooooh! I never knew you and I were so alike Edgey.
Edgeworth: He said "abroad" you idiot! It means away in another country!
Larry: Oh…
Phoenix: After returning from studying… over-seas… Edgeworth finds himself wrapped up in a whole new line of murder investigations.
Edgeworth: One of which even takes place in my own office, can you believe it?
Larry: Oh yeah, investigations murders, VERY original Capcom!
Head of Capcom: You DARE question our judgement Larry Butz?!
Larry: N-no sir! I was just…
Head of Capcom: You watch what you say Mr. Butz, or YOU shall be the next murder victim in your games!
Larry: Yes sir, I'm sorry sir!
Head of Capcom: Carry on. *leaves*
Phoenix: I thought you would have known better then that after what happened to me last time Larry.
Larry: *sob*
Edgeworth: Moving on. In this game it's up to me to single handily find out who the true criminals behind these murders are and bring them to justice. All the while investigating into a mysterious murder case from ten years prior, and finding out the mysteries surround the strange thief Yatagarasu.
Larry: Hey Edgey, why haven't you ever talked about these cases before?!
Edgeworth: Well I… erm… wanted to forget them?
Larry: And if Yatagari… Yatagary… Yatagiri…
Edgeworth: Yatagarasu?
Larry: Yeah that guy! If he's such a famous thief then how came we never heard about him before this game?!
Edgeworth: Well…
Phoenix: Regardless of these things, I rather enjoyed the story myself.
Edgeworth: Thank you Wright.
Larry: "Thank you"?! Did you write it then?!
Phoenix: While there are some minor plot-holes I could point out, I'll let them go. The story was well written, as to be expected from our games. It has some nice themes; some shocking plot twists, and wraps up nicely. The interactions between some of the characters were some of the best in the series.
Edgeworth: Naturally, did you expect any less?
Phoenix: Well no, but I kind of expected… something more…
Edgeworth: What do you mean?!
Phoenix: Oh, it's nothing major. It's just that some of the trailers, even those that came out very close to the game's release, showed some content that wasn't in the game.
Edgeworth: Yes, but that's nothing new to ANY game series is it?
Phoenix: No, but at certain points I was expecting something to happen, but it didn't.
Edgeworth: But as I said, this isn't the only game to do this, so you can't really get mad at it for that can you?
Larry: I can!
Edgeworth: You'll get mad at it simply for existing Larry.
Larry: Damn straight!
Phoenix: Well what we've got in an interesting, shocking, and sometimes even quite funny, plot that gets you interested and wanting to investigate more.
Edgeworth: I couldn't have put it better myself.
Phoenix: However, there are some things in there that can only be understood if you've played the other games in the series.
Edgeworth: While that's true, it's not so much that someone who's unfamiliar with our series can't pick it up right? It just means they won't get certain references. If anything that will make them want to get the other games in the series.
Phoenix: You sure do like to praise your own game…
Edgeworth: As if you wouldn't do the same Wright.
Phoenix: Anyway, scores gentlemen?
Edgeworth: An absolute 10.
Larry: An absolute 0!
Phoenix: *sigh* It looks like I'm the only one who can be fair… can we all agree on an 8? Yeah, the plot's really good, just not the absolute best from our series. It's nothing ground-breaking, but it's not trying to be.
Edgeworth: Hmph… I suppose I can let that slide.
Larry: I still say 0! I mean, sometimes it just seems like it's dragging the plot out just for the sake of making the game longer!
Edgeworth: Nggh…
Phoenix: Yeah, but that's nothing new to the series. Heck even MY games do that.
Larry: Why do you continue to stand up for a series you're no longer the star of Nick?!
Phoenix: I just want to do a fair review Larry, that's all.
Edgeworth: Now shall we move onto this game extremely enjoyable gameplay?
Larry: What gameplay?! You just press A all the time to scroll past the millions of dialogue boxes!
Edgeworth: You do that in ALL our games Larry! And you KNOW that's not the only factor!
Phoenix: The game involves walking around a crime scene, collecting clue and leads towards who committed the murder, and putting them all together to find out who that person is.
Edgeworth: And Wright literally means "walking" this time. Unlike in the main game of the series where you just point and click where you want to inspect, you can actually move me around the crime scene.
Phoenix: Yeah, but if you look at it in the big picture nothing's really changed. The crime scenes aren't that big to begin with, so really it's just disguising that you're doing the exact same thing you always do, they've just replaced the cursor with you.
Edgeworth: O-okay, I suppose that's true… but what about my "Logic" feature! That's something new!
Larry: You mean that stupid feature that seemed like it was just added in there just to get people to press another button?!
Edgeworth: I'll have you know it's a very innovative feature that gets the player thinking Larry!
Phoenix: As you progress through the game you collect different "leads" as to who the real murder is and what their motives were.
Edgeworth: I then collect those leads in my brilliant photographic memory.
Phoenix: *sigh* Then by hitting the "Logic" button you can take two leads you've collected and see if you can connect them in order to bring you closer to the answers. However, get on the wrong track of logic and you'll be punished.
Edgeworth: He means if you try and connect two things that don't go together my "life bar" will suffer. Of course, I never have that problem normally. Any flaws in my logic will be purely the player's fault.
Larry: But what's the point?! What's the point in even having it there?!
Edgeworth: To try and get the player thinking Larry.
Larry: It just seems kinda pointless to me. It's just something there to drag out the gameplay; making the players press a different button for the sake of moving the plot along.
Phoenix: While it may seem that way to you Larry, Edgeworth does make a point that it gets you thinking. Connecting two leads together and coming to the right conclusion can be really satisfying as well.
Edgeworth: I suppose it all comes down to how you look on it. I personally think it's a wonderful way of differentiate my way of solving crimes to yours. Where you use magical items, I use science and logic to get my answers.
Phoenix: … I don't know whether he was insulting me there or not…
Edgeworth: Another new feature is my ability to point out contradictions in the crime scenes.
Larry: What is it with you two and your "contradictions"?! There isn't even any court-room scenes in this game!
Phoenix: He just means this game lets you point out things in the crime scene that don't add up to the evidence Larry. It's to see if the crime scene's been tampered with or not and to give him some new leads.
Edgeworth: Once I've found where the contradiction lies and what evidence it contradicts the player may also yell "EURIKA!" into the microphone.
Larry: I never got the point of that with any of our games. I mean, can you imagine yelling "Objection" while riding on a bus or something? It'd be embarrassing.
Edgeworth: I don't think you can talk about being embarrassing in public Larry.
Phoenix: After collecting all the leads and clues that the crime scene has to offer it's time to take on either a suspect or someone who's suspecting the wrong person in-
*dramatic music plays*
Phoenix: Debate!
Edgeworth: …
Larry: …
Phoenix: … well you do…
Edgeworth: Well yes I suppose I do. Someone will present an argument about the case, and it's up to me to find the holes in their logic in order to find the truth.
Phoenix: It's the game's answer for a court-room scene.
Larry: Not so fast! Aren't you a Prosecutor Edgey?! Why does it feel like you're playing the defence side then?
Edgeworth: W-what do you mean?!
Larry: Well you're basically trying to prove the initial suspects innocent. Should you be the one trying to prove them guilty though?
Edgeworth: I'm merely trying to get to the truth Larry. I can't have the police force making a false arrest.
Phoenix: That never stopped you in the past…
Edgeworth: 'Once you've eliminated the impossible whatever remains must be the truth', isn't that the motto our series goes by?
Larry: But you've said yourself it's a Prosecutor's job to doubt!
Edgeworth: Yes, and in this game I doubt the people I argue against are going down the right path.
Phoenix: Putting this contradiction asides-
Edgeworth: Don't tell me you're taking his side Wright!
Phoenix: I'm just trying to get to the end of the review. Anyway, putting that contradiction asides for now, while the gameplay may just be a cheap way of disguising the fact that you're doing the same thing you always do in our games-
Edgeworth: Ngggh!
Phoenix: Come on Edgeworth, you know it's true.
Edgeworth: Uggggh… I-it is how you look on it…
Phoenix: While it may be doing that it's still a very fun game to play. There are some interesting new features in there that are a lot of fun to use, and it's really satisfying once you start going down the right path.
Edgeworth: Now that's more like it.
Phoenix: Besides, our games are more about the stories then gameplay anyway.
Larry: Mine won't be!
Edgeworth: Yours is never going to exist Larry!
Larry: :(
Phoenix: Anyway, dare I ask what your final scores are?
Edgeworth: 10.
Larry: 0!
Phoenix: I can see a pattern forming here…
Edgeworth: He's only saying that because the game stars me.
Larry: Look who's talking!
Phoenix: Well seeing as I'm the only one who can be fair I'll say a 7. Yeah there are some nice new features here and there, but really the game's just trying to disguise that it's the same thing. However that's not a bad thing, as our games are still fun to begin with, and at least this one tried to make itself stand out from the crowd.
Edgeworth: I suppose I can accept that, as long as it's still a high score.
Larry: I will NEVER accept this game as part of our series!
Phoenix: Now graphics… oh this should be fun…
Larry: This is where the game fails most of all!
Phoenix: How so?
Larry: The sprites have LEGS!
Phoenix: Er… we have legs too Larry…
Larry: I know, but you're not meant to SEE our legs Nick! This is blasphemy!
Edgeworth: You can't complain about that seeing as you're-
Phoenix: What Larry's talking about is that this time around there are little full-body sprites of the characters walking around the screen at each crime-scene.
Edgeworth: This is what I was talking about before when I mentioned the fact that you do actually do make me walk around the screen.
Phoenix: However when you interact with a key character it switches over to the larger, more detailed sprites our series is known for. Except this time they're facing to the side, with a sprite of Edgeworth, or whoever else the character may be talking to, facing across from them.
Larry: This is madness!
Edgeworth: Madness? Thi-
Phoenix: No! We're not doing that reference! It died ages ago!
Edgeworth: Didn't stop you in Trials and Tribulations did it?
Phoenix: *sigh* Moving on, this is where the game really tried to differentiate itself as a spin-off. As to be expected from our series, all of the characters and locations are very unique, colourful and well designed.
Larry: Ngggh!
Phoenix: What?
Larry: I… can't find an argument against that…
Edgeworth: Aha! So you've finally succumbed to the fact that my game is great then Larry?
Larry: No! NEVER! I will forever give this game a 0! Even if it doesn't deserve it!
Edgeworth: Well at least you finally admit you're prejudice nature towards this game…
Phoenix: The cutscenes are always gripping and epic. Especially the opening ones, which really get you into the mood for playing each case.
Edgeworth: Of course, did you expect any less?
Phoenix: Before you go giving it a 10, let me just point out one flaw in the graphics.
Edgeworth: And what would that be?
Phoenix: Well most of the time when the characters are talking in the larger sprites the characters that are on your side just have theirs flipped around when they're talking.
Edgeworth: While that's true, you can't really blame them can you? I mean it is hard enough to make the sprites in the first place Wright. As long as it's clear as to who's talking and whom they're talking to I don't think it really matters.
Phoenix: Yes, but it is a tad lazy if you ask me.
Larry: Oh thank you Nick for pointing out a flaw in this section!
Phoenix: It's what I do Larry.
Edgeworth: I suppose because of this you're going to give it a 9?
Phoenix: 9's still a high score Edgeworth. Near perfection in fact.
Edgeworth: I suppose.
Larry: I still say 0!
Phoenix: Now music.
Larry: The music's HORRIBLE! A complete murder of my ears!
Edgeworth: The music is great Larry! For once it's all to my tastes.
Larry: That's because it's YOUR game!
Phoenix: You two keep going around in circles here…
Edgeworth: What do you mean?
Phoenix: You two keep going back to "You only think it's great because it's your game!" and "You only think it's bad because it's my game!" it's getting annoying…
Larry: Okay Nick, tell us what YOU think of the music!
Phoenix: As much as you're going to hate me saying this, I agree with Edgeworth on this one.
Larry: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Phoenix: Sorry Larry, but I have to admit, the game has a great soundtrack. I'd even go so far as to say it's some of the best from our series.
Larry: *cries*
Edgeworth: Naturally.
Phoenix: However, I don't think it's as good as Apollo's soundtrack. However it is far superior to the soundtracks of Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations.
Edgeworth: Actually the game features some remixes of tracks from those games.
Phoenix: And it does them well. Its original tracks are great too. Detective Badd's theme has to be one of the best themes of all time.
Larry: Nick… please don't tell me you're going to do it…
Phoenix: Sorry Larry, but I'm going to have to give it a 10.
Edgeworth: At last.
Larry: *sobs*
Phoenix: Now here's where we would move onto voice acting, but there is very little of it in the game.
Edgeworth: As with all of our games. The only voiced lines are people saying "OBJECTION!", myself saying "HOLD IT!" "TAKE THAT!" and now even "EURIKA!" and a new one from my new rival Agent Lang "NOT SO FAST!" to replace an objection due to the fact that he's not a lawyer.
Phoenix: And all of them sound fine. Yeah some of them might not be what you imagine a character's voice to sound like, but they work. There's only one that I have a problem with. I can't say who because of spoiler reasons, but people who have finished the game will know who I mean.
Edgeworth: So are we reducing the score to being out of 5 this time seeing as there's so little of it.
Phoenix: Yes, we always do.
Edgeworth: Then I will definitely give it a five. The players have the honour of hearing my sexy British accent in four voice clips this time.
Phoenix: You really are SO modest aren't you Edgeworth?
Larry: I only say 1!
Phoenix: A 1 this time? You're actually giving it a score?
Larry: Only because you get to hear Franzy's heavenly voice :)
Edgeworth: Before she cracks her whip on you…
Larry: Worth it!
Edgeworth: It's only one line!
Phoenix: I suppose a 5 would be fine. I myself would only give it a 4 for the reason I mentioned before, but I have no major issue with giving it a 5… if it will move the review along.
Edgeworth: Well seeing as this is my game, may I have the honour of doing the summery?
Phoenix: I guess. As long as you-
Edgeworth: In conclusion:
- Story: 10
Pro: The absolute best from this series.
Con: Absolute none.
Phoenix: Don't do that!
Edgeworth: What? I'm merely telling the truth.
Larry: He can't be trusted Nick, let me do it!
Phoenix: You can't be trusted either Larry, I'll do it:
- Story: 8
Pro: An exciting, gripping and sometimes even funny, plot. Definitely belongs in the series.
Con: As always though some areas drag on a bit. Also some plot devises seem a bit TOO convenient to be used at the last minute.
- Gameplay: 7
Pro: Simple, easy and fun. Some neat new features.
Con: Is basically just disguising that you're doing the exact same thing you always do.
- Graphics: 9
Pro: As always the characters, locations and cutscenes look great.
Con: During some scenes certain sprites are just flipped around.
- Music: 10
Pro: Definitely some of the best from the series.
Con: None.
- Voice acting: 5 (out of 5)
Pro: The voices work.
Con: Only single lines.
- Overall score: 8
A nice spin-off to our series and a welcome edition. Sure, it's not for those who prefer games where you just come running in with a machine gun and shoot things, but if you're into well written murder mystery plots this game, and our whole series in fact, is definitely for you.
Larry: I still say it's terrible and deserves a 0!
Edgeworth: It doesn't matter what you think!
Phoenix: Look at it this way Larry: This may be the final time we see him in the series, save for a few references.
Edgeworth: I could always have a cameo in the Apollo Justice games!
Larry: True… and with Nick officially out of the picture as main character… it's only a matter of time before we see "Larry Butz: Ace Womanizer"!
Phoenix: …
Edgeworth: … that's it I'm going home…
